Overview

SLCO1B1 (solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 1B1) is a gene that codes for a protein called the organic anion transporting polypeptide 1B1 (OATP1B1). OATP1B1 is a membrane protein that transports various organic anions, such as hormones and drugs, into cells. It is expressed in a variety of tissues, including the liver, kidney, and intestine, and plays a role in the absorption, distribution, and elimination of many substances in the body. Mutations in the SLCO1B1 gene can affect the transport of certain drugs, leading to changes in their effectiveness or toxicity. In addition, the SLCO1B1 gene has been shown to be involved in the development of certain types of cancer, such as liver and breast cancer.
