Gene MMP9

Back to Curriculum

Also known as

matrix metalloproteinase 9, gelatinase B, 92 kDa type IV collagenase, CLG4B

Overview

MMP9 (Matrix Metalloproteinase 9) encodes gelatinase B, an enzyme that degrades type IV and V collagen and other extracellular matrix components. MMP9 is produced by neutrophils, macrophages, and keratinocytes, playing important roles in wound healing, inflammation, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling.

The -1562C/T promoter polymorphism affects MMP9 expression, with the T allele associated with higher enzyme levels. Elevated MMP9 has been linked to skin aging, atherosclerotic plaque instability, and cancer invasion. In the skin, MMP9 is induced by UV radiation and contributes to photoaging through basement membrane degradation.

Understanding your MMP9 genetic status provides insights into extracellular matrix remodeling and inflammatory responses. This information is relevant for understanding skin aging, wound healing capacity, and cardiovascular health.
