KITLG (KIT Ligand) encodes stem cell factor (SCF), a cytokine that binds and activates the KIT receptor tyrosine kinase. SCF is essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells, melanocytes, mast cells, and germ cells. It exists in both membrane-bound and soluble forms with distinct biological activities.Variants in KITLG are strongly associated with skin pigmentation, hair color, and tanning ability. The gene harbors variants that contribute to the lighter skin pigmentation seen in European populations. KITLG variation has also been implicated in testicular germ cell tumor susceptibility and may influence fertility through effects on germ cell development.
