Gene FADS3
Back to Curriculum
Also known as
fatty acid desaturase 3, delta desaturase 3Overview
FADS3 (Fatty Acid Desaturase 3) encodes a member of the fatty acid desaturase family located in a gene cluster with FADS1 and FADS2 on chromosome 11. While less well characterized than its family members, FADS3 is believed to contribute to polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism and may have unique functions in specialized fatty acid modifications.FADS3 is expressed in various tissues and has been implicated in the desaturation of very long-chain fatty acids. Research suggests it may play roles in lipid metabolism that complement FADS1 and FADS2 activity. Variants in the FADS gene cluster, including those affecting FADS3, have been associated with blood lipid levels and cardiovascular disease risk markers in genome-wide association studies.
Understanding your FADS3 genetic status provides additional context for fatty acid metabolism when combined with FADS1 and FADS2 information. This knowledge may help optimize dietary fatty acid intake and supplementation strategies for individuals with variants affecting the entire FADS gene cluster.
