CYP1B1 (Cytochrome P450 Family 1 Subfamily B Member 1) encodes an enzyme that metabolizes estrogens, procarcinogens, and drugs. CYP1B1 converts estradiol to 4-hydroxyestradiol, a potentially genotoxic metabolite that can form DNA adducts and has been implicated in hormone-related cancers including breast and prostate cancer.Mutations in CYP1B1 cause primary congenital glaucoma, demonstrating its importance in eye development and aqueous humor drainage. Common polymorphisms affecting enzyme activity have been studied in relation to hormone-dependent cancer risk, with some variants associated with increased breast cancer susceptibility, particularly in certain populations.
Understanding your CYP1B1 genetic status provides insights into estrogen metabolism and may inform cancer prevention strategies. The enzyme is also relevant for skin health, as it's expressed in skin and involved in UV-induced carcinogenesis. Dietary compounds like resveratrol can inhibit CYP1B1 activity.
