Gene MMP13
Back to Curriculum
Also known as
matrix metalloproteinase 13, collagenase 3, CLG3Overview
MMP13 (Matrix Metalloproteinase 13) encodes collagenase-3, an enzyme that preferentially degrades type II collagen, the major structural component of cartilage. MMP13 also cleaves other collagens (types I, III, IV) and aggrecan. It plays important roles in cartilage turnover, bone remodeling, and wound healing, but excessive activity contributes to joint destruction.MMP13 is strongly implicated in osteoarthritis pathogenesis, where its overexpression leads to cartilage degradation. Variants affecting MMP13 expression or activity may influence osteoarthritis susceptibility and progression. The enzyme is also involved in skin remodeling and wound healing, where it helps remove damaged matrix during repair processes.
Understanding your MMP13 genetic status provides insights into cartilage and collagen metabolism. This information is relevant for understanding joint health, osteoarthritis risk, and potentially skin aging and wound healing capacity.
