Gene IL4

Also known as
BSF1, IL-4, BCGF1, interleukin 4Overview
IL4 (Interleukin 4) encodes a pleiotropic cytokine that is central to allergic and type 2 immune responses. IL-4 is primarily produced by T helper 2 (Th2) cells and mast cells and plays crucial roles in promoting IgE antibody production, Th2 cell differentiation, and allergic inflammation.IL-4 promotes B cell class switching to IgE, the antibody responsible for immediate hypersensitivity reactions. It also enhances expression of VCAM-1, facilitating eosinophil recruitment to tissues. Genetic variants in IL4 have been associated with atopic conditions including asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis.
Understanding your IL4 genetic status helps assess allergic disease risk and may guide interventions. IL-4 and its receptor are therapeutic targets for allergic diseases, with dupilumab (blocking IL-4 and IL-13 signaling) now used to treat atopic dermatitis, asthma, and other allergic conditions.
