Gene IL1A
Back to Curriculum
Also known as
interleukin 1 alpha, IL-1α, hematopoietin-1Overview
IL1A (Interleukin 1 Alpha) encodes a proinflammatory cytokine that plays crucial roles in immune response, inflammation, and skin biology. Unlike most cytokines, IL-1α is active both as an intracellular protein and when released from cells. It is constitutively expressed in epithelial cells, particularly in the skin, where it initiates inflammatory cascades in response to injury.Variants in IL1A have been associated with skin aging, wrinkle formation, and response to environmental stressors like UV radiation. The -889C/T polymorphism has been linked to differences in skin elasticity and aging. IL1A also plays roles in periodontal disease susceptibility and various inflammatory conditions.
Understanding your IL1A genetic status provides insights into inflammatory responses and skin biology. This information is particularly relevant for understanding skin aging patterns, sun sensitivity, and inflammatory skin conditions.
