Gene IGF1
Back to Curriculum
Also known as
insulin-like growth factor 1, somatomedin C, IGF-IOverview
IGF1 (Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1) encodes a hormone structurally similar to insulin that plays a central role in growth and development. IGF-1 mediates many of growth hormone's effects and is essential for normal childhood growth, adult metabolism, tissue repair, and muscle maintenance. It is produced primarily in the liver in response to growth hormone stimulation.Variants in IGF1 influence circulating IGF-1 levels and have been associated with adult height, muscle mass, and physical performance. The gene is also implicated in longevity studies, with reduced IGF-1 signaling associated with extended lifespan in model organisms. However, the relationship between IGF-1 and health is complex, as both high and low levels have been associated with different disease risks.
Understanding your IGF1 genetic status provides insights into growth potential, body composition, and potentially longevity. This information is relevant for understanding athletic performance, muscle development, and metabolic health.
