Also known as
LE, Les, CD174, Lewis blood group, fucosyltransferase 3Overview
FUT3 (Fucosyltransferase 3) encodes the enzyme responsible for producing the Lewis blood group antigens on red blood cells and in body secretions. This enzyme adds fucose residues to glycan chains, creating the Lewis a and Lewis b antigens that are distinct from the ABO blood group system.FUT3 status affects susceptibility to certain infections, as many pathogens use Lewis antigens as attachment points. Individuals who lack functional FUT3 (Lewis-negative phenotype) may have different susceptibility to Helicobacter pylori, norovirus, and other gastrointestinal pathogens. FUT3 variants also influence tumor marker levels, affecting interpretation of CA 19-9 in cancer screening.
Understanding your FUT3 genetic status provides insights into Lewis blood group phenotype and potential disease susceptibilities. This information may be relevant for understanding individual responses to certain infections and for proper interpretation of some clinical laboratory tests.
