Gene FADS2

Also known as
D6D, FADSD6, fatty acid desaturase 2, delta-6 desaturaseOverview
FADS2 (Fatty Acid Desaturase 2) encodes delta-6 desaturase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the conversion of essential fatty acids to their longer-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) derivatives. This enzyme converts linoleic acid (omega-6) to gamma-linolenic acid and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) to stearidonic acid, which are then further processed to arachidonic acid and EPA/DHA respectively.Common variants in FADS2 significantly affect blood levels of various fatty acids and their ratios. These polymorphisms show strong population differences, with some variants associated with higher conversion efficiency while others reduce enzyme activity. FADS2 variants have been linked to cardiovascular risk factors, inflammatory markers, cognitive development in infants, and response to dietary interventions with omega-3 fatty acids.
Understanding your FADS2 genetic status helps personalize fatty acid nutrition recommendations. Individuals with reduced FADS2 activity may particularly benefit from direct supplementation with preformed long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA) rather than relying on plant-based alpha-linolenic acid sources.
