Also known as
SSC2, elongation of very long chain fatty acids protein 2Overview
ELOVL2 (Elongation of Very Long Chain Fatty Acids Protein 2) encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the elongation of very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly in the omega-3 and omega-6 pathways. ELOVL2 is essential for the biosynthesis of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the brain and retina.ELOVL2 is one of the most robust epigenetic aging biomarkers, with DNA methylation at this locus strongly correlating with chronological age. Genetic variants affecting ELOVL2 activity influence circulating levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which have implications for brain development, cognitive function, and inflammation. The gene is particularly important during pregnancy and infancy for neural development.
Understanding your ELOVL2 genetic status provides insights into omega-3 fatty acid metabolism and potentially biological aging. Individuals with reduced ELOVL2 activity may benefit from dietary DHA supplementation rather than relying on conversion from shorter-chain omega-3 precursors.
