Gene CAT

Also known as
catalaseOverview
CAT (Catalase) encodes one of the most important antioxidant enzymes in the human body. Catalase converts hydrogen peroxide, a reactive oxygen species produced during cellular metabolism, into water and oxygen. This reaction is essential for protecting cells from oxidative damage.Catalase is found in nearly all living organisms exposed to oxygen and is highly concentrated in peroxisomes. Reduced catalase activity has been associated with increased oxidative stress and linked to various conditions including diabetes, hypertension, and accelerated aging. Some studies suggest that catalase activity declines with age.
Genetic variants in CAT can affect enzyme activity and oxidative stress levels. Understanding your CAT genetic status can inform antioxidant supplementation strategies and lifestyle modifications to support optimal cellular protection against oxidative damage.
