Gene AQP5

Also known as

AQP-5

Overview

AQP5 (Aquaporin 5) encodes a water channel protein primarily expressed in secretory glands including salivary glands, lacrimal glands, and sweat glands. AQP5 is essential for the production of saliva, tears, and sweat, facilitating the rapid movement of water across cell membranes during secretion.

In the salivary glands, AQP5 is localized at the apical membrane of acinar cells where it enables efficient saliva secretion. Reduced AQP5 expression or function has been associated with dry mouth (xerostomia) and reduced saliva production, conditions that can significantly impact oral health, digestion, and quality of life. AQP5 has also been implicated in Sjogren's syndrome.

Understanding your AQP5 genetic status is relevant for dental health and glandular function. Variants affecting AQP5 activity may predispose to dry mouth, dental caries, and other oral health issues. Proper hydration and saliva substitutes may be beneficial for individuals with reduced AQP5 function.
