Gene AOC1

Back to Curriculum

Also known as

DAO, ABP1, DAO1, KAO

Overview

AOC1 (Amine Oxidase Copper Containing 1) encodes diamine oxidase (DAO), the primary enzyme responsible for degrading histamine in the intestinal tract. DAO is secreted by intestinal epithelial cells and breaks down dietary histamine and other biogenic amines before they can be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Reduced DAO activity, whether due to genetic variants or other factors, can lead to histamine intolerance - a condition where histamine accumulates and causes symptoms such as headaches, flushing, nasal congestion, gastrointestinal disturbances, and skin reactions. Common SNPs in AOC1 can significantly reduce enzyme activity and are associated with increased susceptibility to histamine-related symptoms.

Understanding your AOC1 genetic status is crucial for managing histamine intolerance. Individuals with reduced DAO activity may benefit from avoiding high-histamine foods, taking DAO supplements before meals, and identifying and avoiding personal trigger foods. This gene is a cornerstone of the Histamine/Allergy Panel analysis.
