ADIPOQ (Adiponectin, C1Q And Collagen Domain Containing) encodes adiponectin, a hormone secreted exclusively by adipose tissue that plays important roles in glucose regulation, fatty acid oxidation, and insulin sensitivity. Unlike most adipokines, adiponectin levels are inversely correlated with body fat - higher in lean individuals and lower in obese individuals.Adiponectin has anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic properties, making it protective against metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Genetic variants in ADIPOQ have been associated with varying adiponectin levels and altered risk for these metabolic conditions. Low adiponectin levels are considered a biomarker for insulin resistance.
Understanding your ADIPOQ genetic status can provide insights into your metabolic health and disease risk. Lifestyle interventions including regular exercise, weight management, and dietary modifications can help optimize adiponectin levels and improve metabolic outcomes.
