Gene ABCC11

Also known as
MRP8, EWWD, WWOverview
ABCC11 (ATP Binding Cassette Subfamily C Member 11) encodes a membrane transporter protein that determines earwax type and is associated with body odor. The gene contains a well-known SNP (rs17822931) that affects both earwax consistency (wet vs. dry) and apocrine sweat gland secretions.Individuals with the AA genotype at rs17822931 produce dry, flaky earwax and have significantly reduced apocrine sweat secretion, leading to less body odor. This variant is common in East Asian populations. Those with the GG or GA genotypes produce wet, sticky earwax and have more active apocrine glands. ABCC11 also transports various substances including bile acids, steroid sulfates, and certain drugs.
Understanding your ABCC11 status can provide insights into your body's natural characteristics and may be relevant for certain drug metabolism pathways. The gene has also been studied in relation to breast cancer risk due to its expression in breast tissue.
