Overview

SLC30A2 (solute carrier family 30 member 2) is a gene that codes for a protein called zinc transporter 2 (ZnT2). ZnT2 is a membrane protein that transports zinc ions (Zn2+) into cells. Zinc is an essential mineral that is required for the proper functioning of many enzymes and proteins in the body. It is also important for immune function, wound healing, and taste and smell. Mutations in the SLC30A2 gene can lead to zinc deficiency or zinc overload, both of which can cause various health problems. In addition, the SLC30A2 gene has been shown to be involved in the regulation of insulin secretion in pancreatic beta cells. Defects in this gene have been associated with diabetes mellitus, a condition characterized by high blood sugar levels.
