Gene NOS3

Back to Curriculum

Also known as

eNOS, ECNOS

Overview

The NOS3 gene (also known as the nitric oxide synthase 3 gene) encodes for an enzyme called endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). This enzyme is responsible for the production of nitric oxide, a signaling molecule that plays a role in various physiological processes such as blood pressure regulation, insulin secretion, and immune system function. Variations in the NOS3 gene have been linked to several health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes. Some studies have also suggested that the NOS3 gene may be involved in the development of certain types of cancer. However, more research is needed to fully understand the role of this gene in health and disease.
