Gene MAOB

Back to Curriculum

Also known as

MAO-B

Overview

The MAOB gene codes for the production of an enzyme called monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). Like monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), which is encoded by the MAOA gene, MAO-B is responsible for breaking down certain neurotransmitters, including dopamine and norepinephrine, in the brain. These neurotransmitters play important roles in mood, behavior, and other mental processes. Variations in the MAOB gene have been linked to several mental health conditions, including Parkinson's disease and depression. Some studies have also suggested that the MAOB gene may be involved in the development of certain types of cancer. However, more research is needed to fully understand the role of this gene in health and disease.
