Gene MAOA

Also known as

BRNRS, MAO-A

Overview

The MAOA gene codes for the production of an enzyme called monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). This enzyme is responsible for breaking down certain neurotransmitters, including serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, in the brain. These neurotransmitters play important roles in mood, behavior, and other mental processes. Variations in the MAOA gene have been linked to several mental health conditions, including aggression, anxiety, and depression. In particular, a variant of the MAOA gene known as the "warrior gene" has been associated with increased aggression and impulsivity in some individuals. However, it is important to note that genes do not determine behavior or mental health outcomes with 100% certainty, and that environmental and other factors also play a role.
