Also known as

BD1, HBD1, DEFB-1, DEFB101

Overview

DEFB1 is a gene that codes for a protein called beta-defensin 1. This protein is part of a family of antimicrobial peptides called defensins, which play a role in the immune system. Beta-defensin 1 is expressed in the skin, respiratory tract, and genitourinary tract, where it helps to protect against infections by killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. Beta-defensin 1 is also involved in the development and maintenance of the skin barrier, which helps to keep the skin hydrated and prevents the penetration of harmful substances. Mutations in the DEFB1 gene can lead to a deficiency of beta-defensin 1, which can increase the risk of infections and other problems.
